BackGround

IOGOOS Was formerly established during the Mauritius conference in November 2002 and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), India was recognized as IOGOOS Secretariat. Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has since then acting as IOGOOS Secretariat.

25 Institutions from 14 countries viz. Australia, France, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Reunion, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and USA as well as the IOC's Perth Regional Programme Office are Members of IOGOOS. Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem (BOBLME) has joined as a new associate member during IOGOOS 7th annual meeting held at Perth, Australia. Further, Institutions from several other countries in the region have been actively contributing to the IOGOOS initiatives and a few of them have expressed their willingness to become Members soon.

Members of IOGOOS are collaborating to work together for developing programmes for the implementation of GOOS in the Indian Ocean and for promoting activities of common interest for the development of operational oceanography in the Indian Ocean region. IOGOOS has already made significant progress in several areas. IOGOOS has a number of existing 'projects' within its portfolio and these projects have been accepted by members as being of relevance to IOGOOS at either a local level (for a specific member nation) or as generically relevant in respect to transferability of the projects outcomes and outputs to some or all member nations. As IOGOOS projects, they receive endorsement through IOGOOS and financial and in kind support through IOGOOS's sponsors and/or through member nations directly.

Annual meetings are held in each calendar year to discuss the major items of policies, establishment of projects, formation of subsidiary bodies review of work, and modification of the Rules, etc. A series of 7 such annual meetings have been organized successfully at various places of the Indian Ocean rim countries. The Eighth Annual Meeting is scheduled during February 22-24, 2011 at Tehran, Iran.
