Brief Description (Abstract):

The overall aim of the project is to elucidate the oceanographic drivers of ecosystem variability throughout the Chagos Archipelago with specific focus on the aggregation of apex predators and their prey over seamounts, species diversity, abundance and zonation within the mesophotic coral ecosystem, and reef manta behaviour. The data comprise results from three research cruises to the region during November 2019, March 2020 and March 2022 during which numerous oceanographic moorings equipped with multiple temperature sensors and ADCPs were deployed, surveys of the MCE conducted with remotely operated vehicles, and tracking of reef manta through the deployment of an acoustic array at an atoll where manta are known to be found in large numbers.
