"Tides and its applications in Oceanography"

Background:

Tides are one of the most fundamental periodic oscillations in the world oceans which are part of the daily lives of coastal dwellers. Accurate tidal predictions are essential for coastal engineering, disaster management, port and harbor operations, navigation as well as coastal zone management. Besides, a better understanding of tides is inevitable while studying the coastal dynamics and ocean circulation. Tide gauges are installed in many ports and harbours and locations of strategic importance for measuring the sea-level. In regions where tidal ranges are large, the occurrence of tropical cyclones can lead to severe flooding and increased destruction. Data from these tide gauges are also being used for monitoring the occurrence/approach of natural disasters like tsunamis and storm surges. Long time-series of tide gauge data are one of the most important sources of information on the sea level changes associated with global warming.

There are several tide gauges installed all along the coasts of India, mainly by the Survey of India. In recent years, ESSO-INCOIS alone has installed and managed about 31 tide gauges that are reporting sea level on real time to INCOIS. Data from these tide gauges are archived in INCOIS and being used for many studies apart from real time monitoring of sea level as part of Indian Ocean Tsunami and storm surge early warning system. At present times, it is important to have specialized skills to process and analyze sea-level data derived from tidal observations.

About the course:

In this course, we intend to introduce the basics of the physics of tides and the methods of tidal data analysis. Additionally, we are keen on providing an overview on quality control of tidal data and an introduction to tide modelling. This would be beneficial to oceanographers engaged in studying tidal forecasting, design and planning of coastal structures, storm-surge and inundation, coastal circulation, sea-level rise, spatio-temporal variability of sea-level as well as ocean dynamics. The training will include lecture sessions by specialists and hands on practical sessions.

Course contents:

a.The Lectures will tentatively cover the following topics:

  • General introduction to tides and the physics of tides in real oceans.
  • Propagation of tides along continental shelf, shallow water and coastal region.
  • Application of sea level data analysis in Oceanography
  • Impact of the atmosphere on sea-level
  • Modern techniques of sea-level observations
  • Modelling of tides at global and regional scales

b.Practical Sessions on:

  • Tidal analysis and prediction
    • Quality control of tidal data
      • Harmonic analysis for oceanographic applications.
        • Near-shore tide modelling
        • Faculty

The faculty for the course will consist of scientists/experts in the field of tides and sea-level from different Institutes across India and abroad. Experts will also be drawn from the host institute (ESSO-INCOIS). These experts have long and varied experience in the field of Oceanography with exposure to tidal data analysis, quality control, modelling and applications.

          Venue :

The training course will be held at ITCOocean, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, India.

          Who can apply?

The training program is open to scientists, post-graduate fellows and doctoral students involved in oceanographic work with specific reference to tides and its applications. Priority will be given to students from Indian Ocean RIM countries. The trainees are expected to have basic knowledge of oceanography along with basic computer skills. Preference will be given to the candidates pursuing their research or building a carrier in the above topics.

          Course Pre-requisites:

          • It is expected that the participants should bring their own laptops.
          • Candidates should have their laptops pre-installed with a Linux based OS, as well as oceanographic visualisation software like FERRET, OCTAVE and FORTRAN.
          • Candidates should possess knowledge of formats of data in which most of the oceanographic data sets are available.
          • Participants should preferably bring their own laptops.
          • Good working knowledge of English language.

          Course Fee and Financial Support:

A consolidated amount of Rs 6000/- is charged for the attending the course. This includes expenditure for accommodation on twin sharing basis, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Applicants need to find resources to fund themselves for attending the course and INCOIS will not be able to give any waiver or support in any form.
