Seminar on
"The Oceanography of Tropical Cyclones"
08th August, 2022 from 16:00 to 17:30 Hrs IST
Organized by
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean)
ESSO-INCOIS, Hyderabad, India
Cyclones, or more generally Tropical Cyclones, have large impacts on subtropical coastal regions, particularly in North America and southern and eastern Asia. With climate change, we expect significant changes in these impacts. These storms operate as heat engines, drawing their energy from the transport and condensation of warm seawater against the colder upper troposphere. Their intensity and evolution is thus affected by the temperature of the underlying ocean and thus ocean dynamics. This talk will describe these interactions, the tools and strategies used to measure them and present outstanding problems and challenges as well as reviewing the expected changes in the future.
Eric D'Asaro, Professor of Oceanography in the School of Oceanography and Senior Principal Oceanographer at the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington.
By invitation only.
