Overview:

The current course will provide exposure to the Indian Naval officers and International Liaison Officers (ILOs) attached to Indian Navy on various operational aspects of Indian Ocean Tsunami Early System operating from INCOIS. Indian Navy is a regular collaborator of INCOIS and is utilizing specialised online tools developed in house at INCOIS for their operational requirements This includes the services like the Search And Rescue Aid Tool (SARAT) for supporting search and rescue operations in the sea, in case of any untoward incidents in the sea; Online Oil Spill Advisory (OOSA) system for providing oil spill trajectory forecast during oil spill incidents. Regular ocean state forecasts (winds, waves, currents, tides) covering the geographical region of their interests is also provided routinely, for movement of their vehicles. Also INCOIS have developed MaMeAT and SoVeT tools for operational use by Indian navy from marine meteorological data and sub-surface profiles measured by Argo floats.

This training provides a in depth exposure on the Indian Tsunami and Early Warning Services (ITEWS) being provided by INCOIS to India and countries in the Indian Ocean region. This training will be helpful to the Naval and International Liaison officers, who are placed in various operations of Indian Navy for timely action as demanded by them. The course is designed to cover observational, modelling aspects along with details description of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) followed for timely dissemination of Tsunami alerts to general public

Aims and Objectives

• Over view of ITEWS activities.
• Understand the observational data used in Tsunami services.
• Understanding the Tsunami decision support systems and SOPs.
• Exposure to Standard Operating Procedures followed at INCOIS.
• To understand the modelling aspects involved in Tsunami services.

Learning Outcomes

• Knowledge and understanding of ITEWS services and products.
• Capability to use the web based Tsunami services and alerts independently from their centres
• Handling the specialised Tsunami tools developed for operational use if need arise.
