"Fundamentals of Ocean Modeling"
during
27 September - 1 October, 2021
Organized by
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean)
ESSO-INCOIS, Hyderabad, India
Numerical Ocean Modeling has become an important branch of Oceanography, which has a wide range of applications from understanding the physical and bio-geochemical processes in the oceans to operational ocean forecasts. Essentially, numerical ocean models are representation of Physical/Biogeochemical processes as mathematical equations and solving them numerically with the help of powerful computational facilities by applying the necessary boundary and initial conditions. The present generational ocean circulation models highly complex and computationally very intense. Yet, they are very useful tools for studying different phsyical and biogeochemical oceanographic processes, making short term forecasts of ocean circulation as well as marine related hazards, and providing climate projections etc. Hence a broad understanding on the numerical ocean modeling will be a very desirable for young researchers who step into the field of oceanography.
Considering the importance of the Numerical Ocean Modeling in the field of oceanography, the present course will provide brief ideas on the fundamentals of ocean circulation modeling, data assimilation, biogeochemical modeling, waves/storm surge/tsunami modeling. The participants will also get a chance to get exposure to a state-of-the art operational ocean forecast system during the course.
Target audiences include, but are not limited to, the following:
