Overview:

Geospatial science provides vital information for the sustainable use of coastal resources and planning. It is imperative to use such techniques for managing densely populated coastalenvironments. This course offers an overview of GIS applications pertaining to coastal mapping. Itwill provide the basic GIS mapping techniques for coastal erosion, mangrove and coral reef usingopen - source GIS tools. The course also includes data acquisition, processing, analysis andinterpretation of coastal spatial data. Additionally extensive hands-on sessions will be conductedto use tools for preparation of thematic base maps for coastal monitoring.

Course Contents:

  • Fundamentals of remote sensing.
  • Thermal remote sensing and its applications
  • Microwave remote sensing and its applications.
  • About various satellites and sensors.
  • Ocean Colour Remote Sensing and its applications.
  • Fundamentals of GIS and its applications.
  • Hands-on practice using software like SeaDAS and QGIS.

  • Early-stage research students seeking to expand their knowledge of remote sensing in oceanography.
  • Early career professionals working in the field of ocean science who wish to gain a thorough understanding of remote sensing fundamentals.
